چکیده

Plants assimilate inorganic sulphate for the bio synthesis of sulphur containing compounds. The enzymes required for reduction are found pre dominantly in the plastids which provide the necessary energy and the reductants. Sulphate re duction like nitrate or carbon dioxide assimilation is endergonic; for comparison, N 0 3 reduction to ammonia requires +347 kJ mol1 and C 0 2 re duction +478 kJ mol1 (Thauer et al., 1977). About twice as much energy is necessary to assimilate sulphate under aerobic conditions:

Bacterial Proliferation Reduces Sulphur Toxicity in Stabilization Ponds: Safer Water Resources by Photosynthesis

Background: Studies suggest that sulfur may react with plants or monocellular organisms, such as fungi, to produce toxic agents. It has been theorized that sulfur enters cells and affects their respiration. This study reports on a phototroph development that leads to the diminution and/or production of sulfur and release of hydrogen sulfide from public ponds. Methods: This study was conducted ...

Improved sulphate removal rates at increased sulphide concentration in the sulphidogenic bioreactor

The product of the biological sulphate reduction is sulphide. High concentrations of molecular H2S (g) can be inhibitory for microbial activity, especially at a reactor pH of 6 to 7. This paper focuses on the effect of high sulphide concentrations on the sulphate reduction rates. The results of three investigations operating a continuous reactor, a column reactor and batchtest reactors have sho...

Modelling of Bacterial Sulphate Reduction in Anaerobic Ponds: Kinetic Investigations

The aim of the study was first to develop a simple and practical model of anaerobic digestion including sulphate-reduction in anaerobic ponds. The basic microbiology of our model consists of three steps, namely, acidogenesis, methanogenesis, and sulphate reduction. This model includes multiple reaction stoichiometry and substrate utilization kinetics. The second aim was to determine some kineti...

Alternative pathways for hydrogen disposal during fermentation in the human colon.

Hydrogen gas, which is produced during fermentation in the human colon, is either excreted in breath or metabolised by gut bacteria through a variety of pathways. These may include methanogenesis, dissimilatory sulphate reduction, and acetogenesis. To determine which of these routes predominates in the large intestine, stools were taken from 30 healthy subjects and incubated as 5% (w/v) slurrie...

Biological Sulphate Reduction with Hydrogen in a Jet Loop Biofilm Reactor

Biological sulphate reduction is a new technology that can be used for the treatment of wastewater containing high amounts of sulpates and metals. The objective of this work was to investigate the feasibility and efficiency of biological sulphate reduction in a sulphidogenic jet loop biofilm reactor using hydrogen as electron donor. Polystyrene balls (qty: 265g, size > 2mm, density: 135 kg/m 3 ...
